First Sunday of Advent: Lifting Our Eyes to Hope (C)

Today, we begin the season of Advent, a time of anticipation and preparation for Christ's coming. The readings invite us to reflect on God’s promises and our response.

In the First Reading, the prophet Jeremiah brings hope to a suffering people, promising that God will raise a just and righteous Savior from the line of David. This promise reminds us that God’s justice is not division or punishment but restoration and relationship. As Jeremiah connects it, true justice brings safety and peace to all.

In the Gospel of (cf. Luke 21:25-28, 34-36), Jesus encourages his disciples to stand firm in faith, even when signs of trouble and chaos arise. These apocalyptic warnings may stir fear, but Jesus calls us to lift our eyes toward God, trusting in His guidance and love. Our response to fear should not be panic or despair but vigilance and prayer.

St. Paul’s words to the Thessalonians deepen this message. He calls us to “abound in love,” not only for one another but also for all creation. This love reflects the love of God the Father, made visible in Jesus Christ. Paul challenges us to act in ways that align with our calling as disciples, showing compassion, justice, and mercy in all our relationships.

Advent is a time to confront our distractions, anxieties, and shame. Psalm 25 reminds us that God’s way is not to shame or condemn but to teach, guide, and forgive. Too often, our society relies on shame to correct or control, but God’s love calls us to embrace our true identity as His beloved children. By accepting this love, we are empowered to reflect it to others.

As we light the first candle of Advent, let us lift our eyes to the coming of Christ, who is our hope and salvation. Trust God’s faithfulness and open our hearts to His justice and mercy. In a world of fear and uncertainty, may we be a people of hope, standing firm in faith and love?

Come, Lord Jesus, and guide our hearts to walk in your ways!
