Tuesday of the First Week of Advent (C)

On our journey through Advent, we find ourselves surrounded by literal and spiritual darkness. The days grow shorter, the vibrant colors of fall have faded into gray, and we might feel the weight of this season settling in. Yet, in this very darkness, we hear the comforting truth: Behold, our Lord has redeemed us.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus rejoices in the Father’s revelation to the childlike. What does this mean for us? It reminds us that God’s grace is not reserved for the learned or powerful but for those with humble, open hearts—those willing to see with the eyes of faith. This simplicity of heart allows us to recognize God’s love despite life’s struggles.

Jesus tells the disciples, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.” Advent invites us to sharpen our spiritual vision, look beyond the shadows, and recognize the light of Christ already present among us. The world may seem weary, but the promise of redemption is our hope. God’s love and mercy are not distant—they are here, now, reaching out to us.

Saint Francis Xavier, whose memorial we celebrate today, understood this deeply. His missionary zeal sprang from his childlike trust in God’s promise. Like him, let us carry the light of Christ into the world, especially into places of darkness and despair.

This Advent, let us open our hearts, see with faith, and proclaim with joy: Our Lord has redeemed us.
